Must Know About This

  • The deformed nail plate will gradually grow out and be replaced by a new, normal-appearing nail plate in several months.
  • The condition can also result from a traumatic injury, such as slamming a finger in a door.
  • The affected nail can either be treated either conservatively by drilling a hole through the nail, or by removing the nail.

Good to Know About This

  • Also called “runner’s toe or “tennis toe”, this condition can be painful but not serious.
  • Downward pressure leading to repetitive trauma leads to bleeding and pooling of blood underneath the nail plate.
  • The nail plate may also become thicker and more brittle as a result of the injury.
